Kriyas is a highly sought after subject in our Samyak Yoga alumni community. He 6 Kriyas of yoga (Six cleaning techniques) are also known as Shat Kriya o Shat Karma as described in Hatha Yoga Pradipika. There are 6 types of Kriyas Yoga for complete purification.
As the same suggests, 6 Kriyas of yoga they are preliminary purification techniques that are excellent boosters of immunity.
There are six kriyas and their purpose is to remove impurities, remove toxins and prepare the body for the flow of vital energy or “Prana”.
Our internal organs comprise 11 members systems, i.e., circulatory, respiratory, digestive, excretory, nervous, and endocrine.
Cleaning these organs is vital to making sure your body and mind are healthy, calm, and disease free.
Essentially, kriyas can be defined as the building blocks of our yoga journey as they help to create a sense of awareness beyond the physical level.
These Kriyas are essential preparations, and we practice them before any pranayama, asana, mudra or meditation.
The six kriyas help in the complete detoxification of the digestive tract, starting from the mouth to the anus.
The Shat Kriyas described in Hatha Yoga include:
Dhautirvastistatha Netistratakam Naulikam i.
Kapalbhatischaitani Shatkarmani Prakshate. 2.22 ..
- Dhouti: cleaning the mouth and tube of food
- Basti – Cleaning the large intestine (lower abdomen)
- Neti: cleaning of the nostrils
- Nauli – Strengthening of the abdominal organs
- Trataka: purification of the eyes
- Kapalbhati – Cleansing the frontal area of the brain
6 Kriyas Yoga for Complete Purification
1. Dhauti Kriya
In Sanskrit, Dhauti means “washed‘ In this process, the water is consumed to its full capacity, letting the impurities out of the food pipe with vomit.
Dhauti kriya helps the internal organs to work efficiently and removes excess mucus from the stomach.
In addition, the constant practice of Kriyas balances the Kapha, Pitta and Vata doshas on the body.
Some standard dhauti practices include:
Vamana Dhauti –Consume a large amount of warm water and then vomit it to expel impurities from the food pipe.
Your Dhauti – Swallow a clean muslin cloth soaked in warm water and hold it in your stomach for a few minutes. It is then extracted from the mouth, which removes impurities from the intestinal tract.
Other techniques are danta dhauti (brushing teeth), Jihva Dhauti (scratching the tongue) i Karna Dhauti (cleaning of the ears).
2. Basti Kriya
It is a technique that involves replenishing the body internally by cleaning the large intestine.
Basti is practiced by sucking water or air through the anus. Basti literally means “Hold on” and refers to the bladder.
This technique helps to treat disorders related to digestion, elimination and flatulence. Jala Basti is one of the common practices among all types of basti.
Jala Basti –Traditionally, this was practiced squatting on a river. “Jala” means water. In this cleansing technique, water is used to cleanse the intestines.
The process involves taking a tub of water up to the navel and sitting on it in Utkatasana.
- Lean forward, resting your hands on your knees.
- Suck water through the anus into the large intestine.
- Exhale and perform Uddiyana bandha and Nauli kriya (abdominal cleansing) simultaneously to create a vacuum-like suction. It draws water into the lower abdomen and contracts the abdominal muscles.
- Get up, keeping the water inside the gut for 5-30 minutes.
- Exhale and expel water through the anus.
- The above steps complete a complete round. You can repeat this until the intestines are completely clean.
DISCLAIMER OF LIABILITY – Since it is an advanced kriya, practice it under the careful guidance of a teacher. This is followed by Savasana and mudra sequences to expel the remaining water or air.
3. Neti Kriya
It purifies the nasal cavities from accumulated impurities. It is very important to clean the nasal cavities as it is the path to ‘Prana’ or vital energy. This kriya is made with a clean clean pot.
Neti is of 2 types:
a. Jala Neti – Jala (water) is used as a cleaning tool to remove impurities from the nostrils.
With the pot clean, water is poured through a nostril and then, under the effect of gravity, expelled through the other nostril.
Water coming out of another nostril removes impurities from the nasal passages.
b. Tomorrow Net – In this clean, a rubber thread (sutra) is used to massage the nasal passages so that it opens any blockage present in the nostrils.
4. Treat Kriya
Trataka Kriya is one of the easiest and most effective eye cleansing techniques that involves a constant, continuous look at any external or internal still point. A lighted candle at eye level works best.
Consistent and correct practice increases the power of concentration and purifies the mind of fluctuating thought patterns.
- Internal treatment is when the focus is on the Third eye (located between the eyebrows). This helps to wake up the third eye or the 6thth chakra – Any chakra.
- External treatment is the practice of looking at an external object for a continuous period of time. For example, the lighted candle is at eye level.
5. Nauli Kriya
It is an abdominal cleansing kriya that involves the movement of the lower abdominal muscles to stimulate the digestive fire.
It is a necessary kriya that maintains movement in all the muscles of the body. The practice of Nauli provides a massage effect and purifies the liver, spleen, bladder, pancreas, gallbladder and intestines.
When all these internal organs move regularly, the digestive system and appetite improve. It is done standing with feet apart and knees bent.
- Madhya Nauli – Left and right, both sides and muscles are concentrated in the center
- Vama Nauli – When the two abdominal muscles are aligned on the left side from the central wall.
- Dakshina Nauli – When the two abdominal muscles are aligned with the right side from the central wall.
6. Kapalabhati Kriya
It is the last of the six kriyas that work to improve the functioning of the brain.
Kapalabhati translates as “Shiny Skull”. Often known as a pranayama technique, it is a cleansing kriya to improve respiratory health, energize the body, and keep the mind alert.
In Kapalabhati, the abdominal wall comes in and out quickly along with breathing.
Inhalation is passive and exhalation is active, unlike normal breathing technique. This kriya is performed sitting in a leg position.
During your 200-hour yoga teacher training courses at Samyak Yoga Ashram, you will practice and learn essential kriyas such as Kapalbhati, Neti and Trataka. 300-hour training courses that are level 2 (advanced training) include Sutra Neti, Vamana Dhauti, etc.
Kriyas are best performed under the guided supervision of a teacher.
They bring a beautiful harmony between body, breath and mind, enhance vitality and promote happiness.
