Breathe. A lot.
Breathing is such a basic and fundamental part of yoga and I don’t think it has the hype it deserves. Breathing properly and being truly aware of how you breathe can drastically affect the impact it has and will continue to be your practice in the future. Even if you don’t master complex positions like tree position and bow position or even hand stops, if you can at least control your breathing, you’ve achieved something important.
Practice. Even when you’re not practicing.
Try to stretch and move when you are at home. If you’re taking yoga classes two or three times a week … or maybe it’s once a week or sporadically when you can fit it into your schedule, try to take what you learn in class and apply it at home, at gym or anywhere. otherwise you want to move your body. Yoga provides the basics of stretching (in the simplest terms). Whenever you are moving your body, it will help you keep your muscles moving when you decide to hit the carpet.
Try new things!
Yoga poses are like ice cream flavors, the more you try it, the more you’ll find that you like it! Keep trying new things, even if you’re scared or nervous, start slowly. Many yoga positions seem very intimidating, but I think you will find that the more often you practice, the more flexible you will become, which will lead you to master certain positions. Who doesn’t love trying new ice cream flavors?
This may seem very different to people. What focuses you? What keeps you motivated? What shakes you to the core? What inspires you about yoga? The practice of yoga begins with you. Okay, we may have cheated a bit, because that’s not really a secret, but it’s really YOUR practice. When people channel their inner desires, goals, and what yoga brings to them, they end up being more immersed in their practice and form a deeper connection with themselves through it.
Drop. Stumble. Take it slow.
Look: three secrets in one title! We are really giving it away right now. But seriously, you will fall. You are going to fight. Everything is part of the process. If you’re not great with the fall, you’re not totally overwhelmed with yoga. I can’t tell you how many classes I’ve done repeatedly where I really thought I would master every pose, every transition, only to discover that I spent most of my classes doing the child’s position because my body would often fall over. . The best part is that I wasn’t crazy, because after each turn, it took me one step closer to mastering positions that I didn’t think I would master as quickly as I did. It allowed me the space to mess up where I created faith so I could grow and learn!
Find a mentor, even on YouTube.
I think we all know how amazing yoga is with Adriene. It has made yoga accessible to almost everyone. This secret is probably the most important. People want to feel comfortable when they hit their mat. They want to know that there are practices that are tailored to their specific needs. Whether it’s sleeping yoga, yoga for discomfort, or yoga to help keep kids busy at home, the Internet is a great place to find content. From here, things get trickier, and this is where the true meaning of life lies. We love that there are so many resources now, especially on YouTube.
